Curricula

The instruction belongs to the following themes

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content.

These instructions explain what a curriculum is and how it is related to your work as a teacher.

In Flamma, you will find information about the curriculum from the perspective of the operation of degree programs (requires login with university username).

What is a curriculum?

The degree programme curriculum specifies the degree structure as well as the learning objectives, content and assessment methods of the modules and courses. In addition, the curriculum specifies the degree programme learning objectives that all graduates of the programme are expected to have reached by the time they finish their studies.

You can find the curricula for the bachelor’s and master’s programmes on the Instructions for students page Curriculum and equivalence between curriculums and for the doctoral programmes on the page Scope and structure of doctoral degrees. See the section Where to find the curriculum? for more information.

What has the curriculum to do with my teaching?

Your teaching is a practical implementation of a course that is a part of the degree programme curriculum. When you are planning your teaching, you must be familiar with the course syllabus and the degree programme curriculum. This allows you to ensure that your course fits the degree programme as a whole.

Course information specifies the course’s learning objectives, whether the course is mandatory, the credits awarded, the method of completion, the reading materials and required prior knowledge as well as the grading methods and scale used. When teaching the course, you should take both of these factors and the teaching programme’s guidelines into account. Instructions related to the teaching programme are available here.

Validity and changes to the curriculum

Curricula are valid for three years and they are prepared for all degree programmes and the Language Centre for academic years 2023–2026, 2026-2029, etc.

Decisions on the curricula are made by the faculty councils on the basis of proposals made by degree programme steering groups. Language Centre's curriculum preparation is led by the Chief Specialist and the decision on the curriculum is made by the Director of Language Centre. The decision is made during the academic year before the three-year period.

During the three-year validity period of curricula, minor amendments may be made to them for compelling reasons. The proposed amendments will be discussed by the degree programme steering groups, which may decide to present them to the faculty council. Faculty councils may delegate to degree programme steering groups decisions on some amendments. For further information on amendments to curricula, see the Flamma page on curricula (requires login with University credentials). You can also inquire about the practices of your degree programme from the programme director or education planning officer.

For further information, see the annual teaching planning cycle.

Where to find the curriculum?

Curricula and their parts can be explored as follows:

  • The full curricula of most degree programmes can be found as PDF files on the Instructions for Students website; for bachelor’s and master’s programmes, see Curriculum and equivalence between curricula,  and for doctoral programmes, Scope and structure of doctoral degrees.  Some programmes have published separate tables of equivalence for courses, available on the above websites. To access information relevant to a specific programme, please select it from the drop-down menu at the top.
  • Degree structures and course details are available on the Instructions for Students website under Scope and structure of the degree (bachelor’s and master’s programmes) and Scope and structure of doctoral degrees (doctoral programmes). Please select first the degree programme from the menu at the top, and then the academic year 2023–2024 under ‘Structure of your degree programme’. The goal for autumn 2023 is to publish information on degree programmes and study modules on this page.
  • In Sisu:
    • On the ‘Curriculum planning’ tab, teachers can access information on the study modules and courses they coordinate, and search for any modules and courses. The ‘My teaching’ tab shows information on the teacher’s own courses and examinations, accessible by clicking on their titles.
    • Students can find information on the next curriculum period by changing the version of a course or module in their study plan. They find information on all courses, including any new ones, through the search feature, which can be used without logging in.
  • Course pages, created for all courses in Sisu, can be used to examine course details based on the current curriculum period.
    • Teachers can access their course pages via the Teacher section on Flamma and through Sisu. Instructions for editing the pages can be found on the Instructions for Teaching website at Course pages.
    • Students can access course pages through their study plan in Sisu and their calendar in the Studies service when they have registered for the course in question in Sisu.
    • Anyone can access course pages through the search feature on the Courses pages or the course search in Sisu.
