University of Helsinki’s open education provision is available to explore not only on the University’s public website but also in a new national digital service called Opin.fi

Opin.fi is a one-stop destination for all Finnish open higher education opportunities. It also includes other associated content, such as public lectures, podcasts and open learning materials. Read more about Opin.fi on Flamma

More visibility for University of Helsinki open university studies

Opin.fi eliminates the need for teaching staff to learn a new system, as information from Sisu and course pages is transferred automatically. The service brings open university studies to a broader audience, allowing learners to more easily compare offerings across various higher education institutions.  

How to engage learners and encourage registration for University of Helsinki open university studies?

Consider course titles and content descriptions carefully when designing the curriculum. Think about what the course title conveys to learners and the expectations it sets for course content, even when learners do not know which degree programme offers the course. Informative course titles and content support degree students and continuous learners alike and may encourage continuous learners to choose the University of Helsinki’s open university studies. 

Ensure that your course pages are accurate and current, as they provide an essential preview of upcoming teaching. Posting all relevant information on these pages in advance supports course completion for both degree students and continuous learners. Opin.fi service themes

In addition to the search features, you can search for study offerings by theme in the opin.fi service. Main users of the service at the University of Helsinki set the themes on the study module and course levels in Sisu. Individual course implementations are assigned a theme automatically on the basis of the relevant course.  

Opin.fi themes are: 

The themes are assigned for the open university studies provided by the University of Helsinki using an artificial intelligence tool (Microsoft Copilot). You can view the theme assigned to your teaching by entering the name of the course in the opin.fi term search field. Select the course from the results. The theme assigned for the course is at the bottom of the page. Course implementations are assigned a theme on the basis of the relevant the course. Please note that opin.fi displays only teaching where registration is ongoing. Offerings by partner educational institutions cannot yet be displayed due to technical limitations. 

Opin.fi themes have been defined in cooperation between the Digivisio project developing the service and higher education institutions. Changes to theme titles, descriptions and use of themes are highly likely in the near future once we have received feedback and development requests on the theme functionalities from users. 

Opin.fi showcases additional teaching and research content

You can use Opin.fi to increase the visibility of additional material supporting teaching, such as your videos and podcasts. You can provide an overview of your open university courses and associated content to attract a growing number of motivated students.

At present (spring 2025), the admin user manually inputs information into Opin.fi.
