Power outages and teaching
Anticipate power outages
- Keep your phone and laptop topped up.
- Find out the exit routes in the building.
- Learn to use the flashlight feature of your mobile phone.
- Keep in mind that during power outages, network connections in the building will not work, and the mobile data network may become congested.
Instructions for when a power outage occurs in a teaching facility
- Ask students to stay seated. Tell them that you will wait for five minutes for the power to come back.
- If the power outage continues after five minutes, tell the students how the course will continue and how the lost teaching session will compensated or, if necessary, held at another time. Ask the students to calmly vacate the room.
Operating instructions in a hall examination during a power outage
- General safety precautions should be complied.
- If power is restored within 5 minutes, students can resume the exam from where the exam left off before the power outage.
- If the blackout continues after 5 minutes, the exam is suspended and the invigilators or the teacher in charge of invigilation safely guides students out of the exam hall.
- If an exam is forced to be suspended due to a power outage, new examination date will be arranged as soon as possible.
- The examiner decides on the date of the new exam and the possible assessment of the suspended exam.
Instructions for remote examinations and teaching disrupted by a power outage
- If power is restored within 5 minutes and the remote tools used function normally, the teaching or exam can be resumed from where it left off before the power outage.
- If the blackout or related system failures continue after 5 minutes, the teaching or exam is suspended.
- The teacher notifies the students on how the course will continue and how the lost teaching session will compensated or, if necessary, held at another time.
- In case of exams, a new examination date will be arranged as soon as possible. The examiner decides on the date of the new exam and the possible assessment of the suspended exam.
