On this page, we've gathered guidelines on continuation of teaching in exceptional situations. General information and instructions concerning safety and dangerous situations can be found in the University safety guide on Flamma.

General emergency declared by the authorities

In general emergency situations (e.g. chemical spills, radiation hazards, natural phenomena, or other threats affecting the public), always follow the instructions issued by the authorities.

If the authorities advise people to avoid going outdoors:

  • Teaching sessions or examinations that are already in progress when the emergency begins may continue as normal on university premises, unless the situation requires otherwise.
  • All other on-site teaching and on-site examinations scheduled for that day will be cancelled.
  • Inform students of alternative opportunities or methods for completing the course requirements as soon as possible after the emergency has ended. An alternative opportunity will be arranged no earlier than the day following the end of the emergency.
  • If the situation continues for a longer period, teaching and examinations will be moved online whenever possible.
  • Any problems will be resolved with due regard for students’ legal protection and rights, so that study progress is not unreasonably delayed because of changes caused by the emergency.
  • Remember, and remind others if necessary: in emergency situations, the first priority is always safety, not the immediate continuation of university activities.

For entrance examinations, the arrangements in exceptional situations will be determined in cooperation with other higher education institutions.

Power outages and teaching

Anticipate power outages:

  • Keep your phone and laptop topped up.
  • Find out the exit routes in the building.
  • Learn to use the flashlight feature of your mobile phone.
  • Keep in mind that during power outages, network connections in the building will not work, and the mobile data network may become congested.

Instructions for when a power outage occurs in a teaching facility

  • Ask students to stay seated. Tell them that you will wait for five minutes for the power to come back.
  • If the power outage continues after five minutes, tell the students how the course will continue and how the lost teaching session will compensated or, if necessary, held at another time.  Ask the students to calmly vacate the room.

Operating instructions in a hall examination during a power outage

  • General safety precautions should be complied.
  • If power is restored within 5 minutes, students can resume the exam from where the exam left off before the power outage.
  • If the blackout continues after 5 minutes, the exam is suspended and the invigilators or the teacher in charge of invigilation safely guides students out of the exam hall.
  • If an exam is forced to be suspended due to a power outage, new examination date will be arranged as soon as possible.
  • The examiner decides on the date of the new exam and the possible assessment of the suspended exam.

Instructions for remote examinations and teaching disrupted by a power outage

  • If power is restored within 5 minutes and the remote tools used function normally, the teaching or exam can be resumed from where it left off before the power outage.
  • If the blackout or related system failures continue after 5 minutes, the teaching or exam is suspended.
  • The teacher notifies the students on how the course will continue and how the lost teaching session will compensated or, if necessary, held at another time.
  • In case of exams, a new examination date will be arranged as soon as possible. The examiner decides on the date of the new exam and the possible assessment of the suspended exam.
