Education and qualifications

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content.

The University provides diverse staff training to support teachers’ competence development. Teachers can also acquire further qualifications by completing the teachers’ pedagogical studies module (60 credits) in the field of university pedagogy.

However, the closest place to seek support for your work is within your community of colleagues, who are likely to share the challenges you face when performing teaching and supervision duties. In addition to acquiring further qualifications, it is a good idea to participate in discussions on teaching and supervision in your own field and programme and at your faculty. You can also seek the company of colleagues who have extensive experience, enjoy teaching and supervision or have pedagogical qualifications.

University pedagogical training and support

Studies in university pedagogy

University pedagogy is a multidisciplinary field of research that focuses on pedagogical activities in a university context, including learning, studying, teaching, supervising, grading and performing pedagogical leadership duties. The Centre for University Teaching and Learning (HYPE) trains the teaching staff at the University of Helsinki to become experts in the field of higher education and learning. The centre organises training in three different languages on all campuses.

Their selection of courses comprises basic and intermediate studies (25 + 35 credits). Students who have completed the basic and intermediate studies (60 credits) in university pedagogy have extensive teaching qualifications. You can apply for the right to complete intermediate studies after you have completed the basic studies.

The studies also support development as a supervisor. Student supervision is a key area of a university teacher’s job description. You can, for example, complete the Development of supervision skills and supervision training course (Oman ohjauksen kehittäminen ja ohjausharjoittelu, 5 credits). Staff training also includes a course on Challenging supervision situations (see also the instructions for addressing challenging supervision situations).

Senior lecturers in university pedagogy

Senior lecturers in university pedagogy offer pedagogical support to the steering groups and teachers of the degree programmes on the different campuses. They take part in teaching development projects, organise training and workshops, distribute information about pedagogical matters, bear responsibility for the implementation of the degree programmes’ HowULearn surveys and participate in the development of the UniHow feedback system.

Educational technology training

The University’s Educational Technology Services (OTE) offer diverse expert support and training for the use of information and communication technology. OTE also organises customised training free of charge.

We offer short courses and training for the faculty and staff of the University of Helsinki in tools and best practices in educational technology. You can find our courses on Suffeli by choosing Educational Technology Services as the organization. If you cannot login to Suffeli even though you are a member of the University staff, you can also use the public training calendar.

A TRAINING MADE JUST FOR YOU!

We also offer customized training in the use of tools supported by the Educational Technology Services. The minimum number of participants is usually from 4 to 6 persons.

First, sketch out some objectives and content requests for the training. Then make a list of participants and tell us your date and time suggestion in opetusteknologia@helsinki.fi or fill in this form. Planning, scheduling and preparing the training will take from 1 to 4 weeks, so please contact us as early as possible so we can organize your training on time!

If your training contains some practical training, it should be allowed about 3 hours. The training can be arranged in your premises (then the unit will reserve the room) or in the Learning Centre Aleksandria (Educational Technology Services will reserve the room).
