Completing a credit with custom course credit

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content.

A custom course credit might be necessary when a student is missing a part of a course’s or a study module’s credit. The completion is tailored student-by-student if the student is not able to complete the credit with a course or a part of a course described in the curriculum or offered by the teaching programme.

You can apply for a custom course credit if

  • You are a transfer student whose course’s or a study module’s, that is included in your degree, learning outcomes have not been fulfilled and there are no complementing studies available.
  • You are a student that has transferred from old degree requirements to new degree requirements, and in order to fulfill the learning outcomes of a course or a study module, completing studies with a separate credit is required.
  • The learning outcomes of a course or a study module are not fulfilled due to substitutions of studies completed in a student exchange, and there are no complementing studies available.

Please note that you cannot update outdated studies with a custom course credit. Outdated studies must be completed again in a way defined in the curriculum.

Evaluation of a custom course credit

It is advisable for the student to go through their study plan with their PSP supervisor first. Once the need for the completion of studies has been recognised, the student will agree about the custom course credit with the course’s or study module’s coordinating teacher. As a coordinating teacher of a course or a study module, you will define how the student will complete their studies, following the curriculum’s learning outcomes.

The process of a custom course credit:

  1. The student agrees about doing a custom course credit with the coordinating teacher of the study module or the course that is to be completed.
  2. The coordinating teacher defines what kind of a credit the student is required to perform for the completion. Completion methods can be e.g. an exam, an essay or a portfolio.
  3. The student will enter the custom course credit in their study plan in Sisu as a study draft.
  4. The student will complete the assignments required by the custom course credit.
  5. The coordinating teacher evaluates the credit and sends details of the approved credits to the faculty's student services. You can find a list of required details in the evaluation instructions
  6. The student will submit a custom course credit application in Sisu. Instructions for the application can be found on the Instructions for students page Completing a credit. If necessary, the Student Services will help the student with the application.
  7. The Student Services will process the custom course credit application and register the credit based on information provided by the coordinating teacher.
  8. The Student Services will send the teacher a confirmation about the registered custom course credit.
