Students can lack sufficient knowledge and skill for academic writing. When preparing their theses, students practice academic writing and improve their skills.

Responsible conduct of research

The University of Helsinki is committed to the responsible conduct of research. As part of your work as a supervisor, there are several ways in which you can support the student as they practise academic writing and how to conduct research responsibly:

  • Guide students as they learn the essential features of academic writing in your own discipline, including the citation style used by the scientific community and publishers in the field, how the authors of a study should be indicated, how results are stored and presented, the openness of scientific communications, etc.
  • Address any cheating or plagiarism you discover, see further instructions for teachers on the page Cheating and plagiarism.
  • Offer students information on courses on academic writing. In some degree programmes, the curriculum includes separate courses on academic writing. Language Centre also offers optional writing courses.
  • Direct the student to read the Koipiraittila Academy self-study materials which contain information on the how to take copyright properly into account in academic writing (e.g. the use of images and charts, and appropriate citation practices from the perspective of copyright).
